French AI company Mistral AI unveiled its new language model, Mistral Large 4 (ML4), on 6 October. It is currently available as a preview, with the final version expected by the end of the month.

Known by the nickname “Le Chonk”, the model has one trillion parameters and, according to Mistral, is designed to compete with leading AI models from the US and China in certain areas. In doing so, Mistral aims to strengthen its position as a European alternative to major international AI providers and respond to the lessons from Ecosia’s recent move away from Mistral.

The model’s multimodal capabilities are particularly relevant to professional research and analysis. Mistral highlights critical business applications such as cybersecurity, finance and law as areas in which ML4 is expected to perform particularly well. The company also claims “exceptional performance in coding, agentic workflows and multimodal understanding”, as well as in geospatial analysis.

Another key focus is digital sovereignty and data control. Unlike many closed AI models, ML4’s model weights are set to be made publicly available from the end of October. This would allow companies to run the model on their own infrastructure and retain greater control over the processing of sensitive data. “As the divide grows between closed models that can be disconnected from the internet and open models that are often developed in China, Mistral is positioning ML4 as an alternative to both,” TechCrunch writes.
